_Orig.rel.: Verve V6-8578, 1964 (tracks 1-8) AMG Review: For this Bill Evans session (reissued on CD), bassist Gary Peacock was temporarily in Chuck Israels' place and drummer Paul Motian had returned, filling in for Larry Bunker. The pianist's playing is typically excellent and he sounds inspired by Peacock's presence; the bassist was normally associated around the period with Paul Bley. In addition to a cartoon theme ("Little Lulu"), the group sticks to standards although there are a couple of unusual choices: Noel Coward's "I'll See You Again" and an effective interpretation of "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town." Although not a major release overall, this fine outing is certainly not without interest and should please Bill Evans' fans. — Scott Yanow Three time Grammy winner. The most important post Be Bop pianist's trio. The first track "Little Lu Lu" is a title tune of a Disney cartoon. Elegant "A Sleeping Bee" and rare "Santa Clause Is Coming To Town". Many great songs. The recording from the best time of Bill Evans Trio. Reviewer: A music fan |
