AMG Review (4 1/2): When Branford Marsalis and Kenny Kirkland chose to leave Wynton Marsalis's group to make money with Sting, Wynton had to regroup fast. For this quartet recording with bassist Robert Hurst III and drummer Jeff "Tain" Watts, the trumpeter met up with pianist Marcus Roberts for the first time, performing originals by Wynton, Roberts, Ellis Marsalis and Donald Brown. Marsalis was still very much under Miles Davis's influence at the time but at age 24 he had rather remarkable technique. He stretches out in explorative and consistently creative fashion on these seven straightahead and generally unpredictable selections. — Scott Yanow |
